Topic : Isha Upanishad

“If all the Upanishads and all other scriptures happened all of a sudden to be reduced to ashes, and if only the first verse in the Isha Upanishad were left in the memory of the Hindus, Hinduism would live forever.” With these words Mahatma Gandhi paid tribute to the remarkable Upanishad which by long tradition usually comes first in Indian collections. It is because the very first verse of this Upanishad is, as it were, a proposition, or statement, that is substantiated and authenticated by every other Upanishad. Isha Upanishad is always regarded as first among the Upanishads. The priority it owes to the poetic grandeur and sustained profundity of its language, which in only eighteen verses carves out the fundamental building blocks of mysticism.  All the great thinkers of India, ancient and modern, have received inspiration from the Isa Upanishad.

This Upanishad is the last chapter of the Sukla-Yajurveda Samhita and also called as Samhitopanishad or Ishavasya Upanishad.

We will study the above Upanishad with reference to the interpretation given by Shri Gurudev Paramahamsa Hariharananda ji. Please bring your copy or procure one before the class starts. We are hoping that everyone would study the book, and along with Swamiji’s classes, will be able to deeply reflect upon the esoteric meaning of the mantras from the Upanishad.
